Letters from Burton while training in the U.S. as a Red Cross field officer (1942), from her overseas postings in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippine Islands (1943-1954), and while working with U.S. Army Special Services in occupied Germany (1948-1949); together with photographs. Includes letters describing her training and social life in Washington, D.C., Bowling Green, Va., and San Francisco, Calif.; life and work assignments in New Guinea (1944-1945) and the Philippines (Feb.-July 1945); and day to day life in Frankfurt and excursions to Luxembourg and Berchtesgaden (1948-1949); together with a description of the embarkation of 2000 enlisted men and 110 officers in San Francisco, Calif., for transport to the Pacific theater of operations during World War II.
